What is Resin Bound Surfacing?

Resin Bound Gravel Surfacing is a combination of both stone gravel and polyester resin which is mixed together to form a hard wearing, low maintenance, flexible surface which is resistant to cracking. Resin Bound Surfacing has been around for quite a long time in the United States and recently came across to the UK. It should always be installed by a suitably qualified contractor as should mistakes be made in the installation process they are very time consuming to rectify and most certainly will involve excavation.

Can I have a Resin Bound Driveway at my property?

Yes of course! The main factor in the installation cost will be dependant on your current surface materials at your property. One of our driveway surveyors will be happy to advise you on the options available and explain any preliminary excavation works that would be required prior to installing a Resin Bound Surface. Resin Bound Gravel is a very versatile material and can provide an attractive hard standing in almost any setting.

Do I need Planning Permission to install a Resin Bound Driveway or Surface?

No. This is due to Resin Bound Stone being classified as a SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) compliant building material which effectively means that it is a self draining product. Planning permission for driveways and hard standings are concerned primarily with drainage as not providing adequate drainage to a driveway or hard standing can create additional stress upon street drainage systems and can also cause damp within a property due to standing surface water.

Is a Resin Bound Surface Slippery when wet?

No. Depending on ordering from a quality supplier a high quality Resin Bound Stone system will meet BS 8204-6:2008 + A1:2010 Appendix B for slip resistance. We can also provide an option of mixing fine glass chippings within the Resin which will provide not only a nice sparkling glow to your new Resin Surface but will also provide additional slip resistance!

Do weeds grow through a Resin Bound Gravel Surface?

No. Weeds cannot penetrate a properly installed Resin Bound Surface although water can drain through the product. As with all hard standings maintenance must be carried out seasonally such as power washing and regular sweeping in order to maintain the product quality and integrity.

Is a Resin Surface high or low maintenance? How is a Resin Surface maintained?

Resin Bound Surfacing is classed as a low maintenance surface covering. Regular jet washing and sweeping is all that is required to keep your Resin Bound Gravel Surface looking it's best.

I've heard of both Resin Bound Gravel and Resin Bonded Gravel I'm confused?

Resin Bound Gravel is mixed in a special mixing machine called a forded action mixer. The stones are thoroughly mixed expelling the air from the product and coated with Resin in order to provide a hard wearing, long lasting surface.

Resin Bonded Gravel is much less hard wearing and not as attractive a finish. This is due to the Resin being applied to the ground before application of the stone as a separate layer with the stones being scattered across the top of the resin creating an uneven unattractive appearance.

Resin Bound Gravel is the only product we will install. The process is much more involved with a 2 part polyurethane resin being mixed on site and then combined with separate stone in the colour of the customers choice. This process uses a forced action mixer which is specially designed for specific resin applications and is only used for this type of installation. Our process creates a much more hard wearing, low maintenance, attractive, self draining substrate and lasts for many many years after installation.

I've see Resin products available online and watched videos on Youtube, can't I just install it myself?

Resin Bound Gravel products sold on online auction sites are aimed at DIY installations and should not be confused with commercial grade Resin which is used on drives and pathways. Setting and bonding times of commercial grade Resin products do not allow for unskilled application and must be trowelled smooth to allow for a neat finish. Resin may also stain surrounding surfaces if installed incorrectly.
