What is Block & Brick Paving?

Block Paving is popular all over the world due to it's wide commercial availability, long lasting reputation and attractive finish. Available in a wide range of colours such as Brindle, Charcoal, Grey, Red, Terracotta, Buff, Brown, Heather & Burnt Oker. Block Pavers are primarily manufactured from concrete which is poured into a mould and a pigment is added to achieve the desired colour. Block Paving is designed for external conditions and is very resistant to rain and frost damage. Block Paving clicks into place and locks into adjacent blocks in order to create a solid surface resistant to movement under vehicle and foot traffic. Uniform appearance is achieved and a neat smooth looking attractive surface is created.
Brick Paving is usually carried out using old reclaimed house bricks taken from demolition of existing structures. Brick Pavers can be an attractive finish but are more suited to pathways due to the bricks already having been used and recycled therefore achieving less weather resistance and structural integrity than their concrete block counterparts. Uniform colouring is difficult to achieve due to a mixture of reclaimed materials. A rustic finish is achieved in the final appearance.

Can I have a Block Paved Driveway at my property?

Yes of course! The main factor in the installation cost will be dependant on your current surface materials at your property. One of our driveway surveyors will be happy to advise you on the options available and explain any preliminary excavation works that would be required prior to installing a Block Paved Surface. Block Paving is a very versatile material and can provide an attractive hard standing in almost any setting.

Do I need Planning Permission to install a Block Paved Driveway or Surface?

No. Planning permission for driveways and hard standings are concerned primarily with drainage as not providing adequate drainage to a driveway or hard standing can create additional stress upon street drainage systems and can also cause damp within a property due to standing surface water. Therefore when installing a Block Paved Driveway Surface we will always install adequate drainage in the form of Aco drains from which surface water will be expelled towards the nearest gully or drain therefore avoiding the need for planning applications.

Is a Block Paving Slippery when wet?

No. Block Paving is manufactured from concrete and provides a textured grip under foot and vehicle traffic. Moss should be removed by washing seasonally in order to keep the surface grip satisfactory.

Do weeds grow through a Block Paved Driveway Surface?

No. This is a common misconception. A properly installed Block Paved Surface will not allow weeds to grow through it. Most people confuse weeds with the moss that grows in between the joints of Block Pavers on top of the surface. As with all hard standings maintenance must be carried out seasonally such as power washing and regular sweeping in order to maintain the product quality and integrity.

Is a Block Paved Surface high or low maintenance? How is a Block Paved Surface maintained?

A Block Paved Surface is classed as a low maintenance surface covering. Regular jet washing, removal of moss, sweeping and seasonal good quality sealing is all that is required to keep your Block Paved Surface looking it's best.

Can I install a Block Paved Driveway myself?

Of course, however many DIY installations fail due to inadequate preparation of the Sub Base and shortcuts surrounding excavation works. Particular attention should be paid to locating of underground services such as Gas, Electricity and Water mains.
